6. Ponnurukku Services (Gold Melting Ceremony)

“Ponnurukku” is an important part of the Hindu marriages followed by Sri Lankan Tamils. Basically, this means melting the gold to make the nuptial chord “Thaali”. During the wedding, the bridegroom ties this cord with three knots on the bride’s neck. This is the main act in a wedding ceremony. This is done 21 days before the actual wedding date.

The gold smith starts the ceremony with the making of a cone shaped turmeric Ganesha – manual pillaiyar - by mixing turmeric powder & few drops of water. Everyone joins in the visualizing Lord Ganesha and offers flowers to the turmeric Ganesha. The Goldsmith starts melting the gold coin. The groom would sit in front of the goldsmith during the melting process. The melted coin and other preparations are offered to turmeric Ganesha. Our experienced Goldsmith at your service.
